Meeting food demand amid ever changing climatic conditions comes at a great cost…
- Land subsidence due to excessive overpumping of groundwater aquifers causing critical overdraft of Groundwater basins; destruction of vital water delivery networks (e. g., Friant-Kern Canal, Delta-Mendota Canal).
- Geogenic contaminant remobilization (e. g., As, Cr6+, Se, U) from aqueous sediments and surrounding geology.
- Anthropogenic contaminants (e. g., glyphosate, NO3–; produced waters) derived from pesticide and fertilizer use; fracking activities
Frankly, it’s well past time to “get on board” and acknowledge how these resulting impaired water issues are not only detrimentally affecting local communities in the San Joaquin Valley, but also the State of California as a whole, as well!
